Although Bad Kleinkirchheim is located quite far from major towns, it is well served by road and rail networks, making access relatively hassle-free.

Visitors arriving via Klagenfurt Airport will normally transit at Frankfurt. Otherwise, Munich Airport is the most convenient hub, with direct bus services to the resort. There are also rail links from both Munich and Klagenfurt to Spittal, where buses can be caught to Bad Kleinkirchheim.

Total road distance from Calais to Bad Kleinkirchheim is around 1,200kms, with an extensive system of motorways making the journey fast and comfortable. Road access is via the A10 motorway. Exit at junction 139, follow route 98 to Radenthein, then turn on to route 88, which leads to the resort.

Bad Gastein train station can be reached via Salzburg or Munich. From London’s Waterloo station, take the Eurostar to Bruxelles-Midi, Thalys to Koln, InterCityExpress to Munich, and then Nacht-Schnellzug to Bad Gastein. The trip takes around 18 hours.

Bad Kleinkirchheim is a resort spa in Carinthia, the Austrian state that borders northern Italy and Slovenia. The combination of exhilarating skiing and relaxing hot spring baths makes the resort popular with visitors of all ages.

The town is rather large and there is plenty to do besides skiing. Being an old world spa, the streets are lined with quaint ancient medieval buildings, and dotted with numerous cafés and restaurants. Bad Kleinkirchheim has a wide variety of quality accommodation, from five-star hotels to cosy guesthouses.

The ski terrain features 100kms of groomed trails; all but 11 per cent of them are classified as beginner or intermediate. Yet there is an impressive vertical drop of 1,370m and a FIS run four kilometres long that is named after native son Franz Klammer, hero of the 1976 Olympics in Innsbruck.

There are 34 lifts, including surface lifts, chairs and gondolas. Advanced skiers and snowboarders can find plenty of off-piste routes, and snowboarders also have a specialist park and half-pipe. Cross-country skiers can enjoy 50kms of excellent trails, which are also fine for winter hiking.

Non-skiing activities abound at Bad Kleinkirchheim, with horse-drawn sleigh rides, horseback riding, ice-skating, tobogganing (both night and day), carving, indoor swimming, indoor tennis, indoor golf, solarium and sauna.

February and early March are the best months for skiing at Bad Kleinkirchheim, with bargains to be had in early December and April. Bad Kleinkirchheim ski resort is far from major towns; however, it is well served by road and rail networks.

Located in what is reputed to be Austria’s sunniest region, Carinthia, Bad Kleinkirchheim is a famous old world spa resort town, perfect for families. The homeland of famous Olympic downhill racer Franz Klammer, the ski resort boasts 100kms of groomed ski runs, while the spas and hotels offer thermal treatments, wellness benefits and all-around relaxation.

As an old spa town, Bad Kleinkirchheim boasts countless non-ski activities, as well as an excellent range of hotels, shops, restaurants, cafés and bars. Because the town is quite large and spread out, make sure that you check where your accommodation is in relation to the lifts or you might be getting a dose of extra exercise every day.

Hotels range from elegant to simple and are listed by type: family, sport, business and wellness. There isn’t great nightlife, but there are enough good bars and discos to make any evening enjoyable.

The surrounding slopes have a good mix of runs catering to all levels of ability, although most are for intermediate skiers. There are 100kms of runs, with the longest being four kilometres. The vertical drop is an impressive 1,370m. Boarders and cross-country skiers are also well catered to.

The ski season runs from the beginning of December to early April, with the cheapest times being at either extreme of the season, as well as in mid-January. The resort of Bad Kleinkirchheim is about as far away from the usual gateways to Austria as one can get; however, frequent train and bus services are available. Some skiers choose to connect to Klagenfurt, capital of Carinthia, only 50kms away.
