Information and Story about the Lut Lake
Covering an area of approximately 600 square kilometers between Africa and Syria, Lut Lake has the title of being the lake which is the lowest from the sea level by 422 meters. At the same time, because it is the world’s most salty third lake, it is possible to get in the water without sinking until just above the waistline. The name of the lake which is often used is the Dead Sea.
Why is the lake named “Lut Lake” is because of the belief that the towns of Sodom and Gomora where Lut people lived and Hz. Lut was sent as a prophet will go under this lake. The Qur’an contains the following verse about this subject in the Surat al-Araf.
Lut said to his people: “Are you doing ungraceful-ugliness that no one in the world has ever done before you? “Indeed you are leaving women and lustfully approaching men. Surely you are people who exceeded. “… And we rained upon them a thunderstorm. Look at the end of guilty-sinners. (Surat al-Araf, 80-84).
There is no precise data of these cities being flooded. However, many details such as the volcanic remains, earthquake traces, the formation of saline soils and craters in the region have been investigated and the city has been considered to be located under this lake from the writings and history of the Qur’an.
Swimming here is thought to be quite intriguing because of the salt rate of the Dead Sea. In addition, it is said that the mud and lake water is good for many skin problems and it is healing. In fact, many cosmetic companies are mixing the mud into the content of some products.
Where and how to go to the Dead Sea?
The Dead Sea is a border line between Israel, the West Bank and Jordan. Entering the lake through Israel and the West Bank can be a bit distressing due to visa procedures and permissions. Thus, the best way to go to the lake is through Jordan. From Amman Center you can reach the lake first with a minibus in about half an hour and then a 15 minute taxi ride. As a second option you can join one of these tours as including Lut Lake on the trip plan of many Jordan Turks. It is also possible to spend a few days here as accommodation near the lake is quite comfortable.
